Core Collection. Redrafted Action for Janus Challenge 3
[Organization to be identified] will sponsor a working group to develop a core collection program whereby participating research libraries would acquire the same core materials in selected subject areas. Participants could opt out of participating in those subject areas in which they collect below a core level. The program would begin with monographs and move on to serials once consensus is established. For monographs, this might result in a single North American approval plan. In certain subjects, the core definition may form the basis for an e-only collection. The working group will consider issues relating to core definition, including appropriate languages and the character and nature of library participants. Use statistics and other data should be applied to the creation of such definitions and in monitoring the project.
The purposes of this core collection program would be:
· to promote new and enhance existing cooperative collection development efforts.
· to leverage purchasing power of libraries.
· to consolidate activities associated with the creation and adjustment of basic approval profiles and the monitoring of approval receipts at a national level, so that selectors can concentrate time on the identification and acquisition of advanced and specialized materials.
· to provide benchmarks within disciplines for measuring the quality of core subject collections.
